Itinerary

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed and introduced to your driver/guide in the airport lobby. From there, you will proceed to your hotel, located 40 km away, with an estimated travel time of 45 minutes. Once you reach the hotel, you can check in and settle down. After breakfast, embark on a journey to Sigiriya (165 km/4 hours 30 minutes) to explore the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This awe-inspiring 5th-century citadel, once the refuge of King Kasyapa, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit, lasting approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, offers a chance to marvel at its remarkable features, including the water gardens, boulder garden, mirror wall, frescoes, lion’s paw, and the summit. Discover the rich history and breathtaking views of this majestic “Citadel in the Sky.

Following your morning meal, set out for the ancient city of Polonnaruwa (57 km / 1.5 hours), Sri Lanka’s second-oldest kingdom. Spend 2 to 2.5 hours exploring its impressive ruins and sacred sites. Highlights include the Gal Viharaya (Stone Temple), Lankathilake, Tivanka Image House, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya, the Audience Hall, and the Vatadage. This enchanting journey offers a glimpse into a rich historical era. Return to Sigiriya (57 km / 1.5 hours) and unwind for the rest of the day.

Following breakfast, proceed to Kandy (90 km / 3 hours) with a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple.

Dambulla Golden Cave Temple (1–1.5 hours): A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this temple is perched atop a massive rock over 160 m high. Discover its famous caves, such as Deva Raja Viharaya (Cave of Gods), Maha Raja Viharaya (Great Kings), and Maha Alut Viharaya (Great New Temple). The climb is moderately challenging. Continue to Kandy for a city tour (1.5–2 hours), featuring the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Bazaar, lake, and a cultural show.

After enjoying breakfast, travel to Nuwara Eliya (80 km / 3 hours) with visits to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and a tea factory and plantation. Royal Botanical Gardens (1.5–2 hours): Established as a royal garden in 1371 by King Wickramabahu III, the gardens flourished under King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe. Explore a variety of plants, including cacti, herb gardens, tropical plants, and exotic species. In the afternoon, explore Nuwara Eliya (40 minutes), known as “Little England,” featuring the old brick post office, Grand Hotel, English church, Gregory Lake, and racecourse.

Celebrated as one of the world’s most picturesque journeys, this 25-kilometer (15.5-mile) route winds through Sri Lanka’s stunning hill country. As the train meanders through the mountains, the serene surroundings promise an unforgettable travel experience.
